Three young musicians will take the stage as featured soloists when the Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra opens its 2026-27 season on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Trumpeter Orin O'Neal, 12, violinist Maya Brisard, 14, and clarinetist Jun Kim, 17, won the orchestra's Youth Concerto Competition and will perform with the full ensemble at the Coronado Performing Arts Center, 650 D Ave. The concert, titled "Concertos and Symphonies," runs from 7 to 9 p.m.
The program includes Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro Overture and Clarinet Concerto, Hummel's Trumpet Concerto, a Saint-Saëns violin concerto, Prokofiev's Classical Symphony and Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, according to the Coronado Times. Conductor Osvaldo Mendoza leads the orchestra.
The competition is open to instrumentalists ages 7 to 18 from Coronado and San Diego County. Winners in three age brackets receive gold medals and cash prizes ranging from $250 to $1,000, plus the chance to solo with the orchestra, according to the orchestra's website.
O'Neal, who began playing trumpet at age seven, studies with San Diego Symphony trumpeter Tim Saeger. He performs with the San Diego Youth Symphony, Young Lions Jazz Conservatory and Jacobs Big Band, and earned first chair trumpet in the All-Southern California Middle School Symphonic Honor Band.
Brisard, a Solana Beach resident, studies with Moni Simeonov at the Colburn School. She has served as concertmaster of three ensembles and has performed at Carnegie Hall.
Kim, a senior at Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, studies with Sam Boutris and performs with the San Diego Youth Symphony. He participated in Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra 2 and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and was featured on NPR's From the Top on March 16. He also serves on the leadership team of the Carmel Valley Summer Symphony, a student-run nonprofit providing free music education in San Diego.
Tickets range from $20 to $180 and are available at coronadophilharmonia.org/events.
The orchestra's next concert after Oct. 24 is a holiday program on Dec. 12 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 700 D Ave., featuring selections from Handel's Messiah.
