Kelly Purvis, an appointed Coronado City Council member, picked up the endorsement of the Coronado Police Officers Association (CPOA) ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Purvis announced the endorsement in a paid political letter in the Coronado Eagle & Journal, saying she is "the only candidate endorsed by both local associations." The Coronado Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 1475, endorsed Purvis in the Sept. 23 edition of the Eagle & Journal.

The CPOA endorsement letter, signed by association president Erica Chavira, said the backing followed a review process and vote by the CPOA's full board of directors. The board determined Purvis "consistently demonstrated support for law enforcement," according to the letter.

The firefighters union endorsed more than one candidate. Rebecca King, an attorney also running for council, announced her own Coronado Firefighters Association endorsement in a paid political letter in the Coronado Times. In a separate letter in the Eagle & Journal, King also listed endorsements from Coronado City Workers (AFSCME Local 127), Council Members Carrie Downey and Amy Steward, former Mayor Casey Tanaka and San Diego County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre, among others.

Purvis has also drawn support from Mayor John Duncan, who endorsed her in a letter in The Coronado News. Duncan wrote that after he moved from the council to the mayor's seat in 2024, "the four sitting Council members unanimously selected Kelly Purvis" to fill his vacancy. Duncan noted the endorsement was his personal position, not an official city statement.

At the 2026 Coronado Candidates Forum, Purvis said both of the city's fire stations need upgrades already identified in capital planning. She said she wants police officers and firefighters to have "the best facilities, training and education we can provide," according to her forum responses published in the Eagle & Journal.

Four candidates are qualified for two open council seats: Purvis, King, Andrew Gade and Ricky Hoyt, according to the city's election page. A fifth candidate, Mark Warner, withdrew. The four-year terms run through December 2030.

The voter registration deadline is Oct. 19. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
