Coronado High sophomore Evan Russo won a 50-runner boys' race at the Islanders' Eastern League opener Thursday, Oct. 1, at Morley Field. The varsity girls also picked up a league victory over Crawford.

The meet marked Coronado's first league competition of the 2026 season. Head coach Pete Wilson provided results to the Coronado Times.

Girls beat Crawford, fall four points short of San Diego High

The varsity girls defeated Crawford but came up short against San Diego High in dual-meet scoring. San Diego High posted 26 points to Coronado's 30; in cross country, the lower total wins. Four points separated the Islanders from a sweep.

Senior Vivian Scott led Coronado over the 3.11-mile course, finishing 12th overall in 22:31.7. Senior Maya Wilson was close behind in 14th at 22:49.1. Carly DeVore, Lily Humphrey and Teaghan Carpinito rounded out the five varsity scorers. Juniors Annalei Berke and Ava Schlomer also ran for Coronado in the girls' Open race.

Russo dominates boys' Open field

Russo covered the 3.11-mile course in 18:18.0 to win the boys' Open race outright. The sophomore posted a personal-best 16:37.26 at the New Balance San Diego River Park Invitational earlier this season and has been Coronado's top finisher all fall.

Junior Ziggy Raunig placed fourth in 19:14.2 and junior Sebastian Tamariz finished eighth in 19:55.3, giving Coronado three runners in the top eight. Both Raunig and Tamariz broke 18 minutes for three miles at the Grit and Grind XC Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 26, the last invitational before league play.

The strong front pack pushed Coronado to a third-place team finish among five scoring teams with 62 points, one point behind second-place St. Augustine at 61. Senior Oliver Surdykowski (22:09.3), sophomore Jacob Ingold (22:35.0) and junior Timothy Gilbert (22:49.4) filled out the scoring group. Freshman Felix Scott and sophomore Daniel Turner also finished for the Islanders.

What's next

Eastern League Cluster #2 was canceled because of anticipated heat, giving the Islanders an extra week of training. Coronado returns to league competition at Cluster #3 on Thursday, Oct. 15, where the varsity girls will get a rematch with San Diego High.
