Night Hawk, an outdoor Mediterranean restaurant at The Baby Grand hotel on Orange Avenue, is open and serving Greek open-fire dining to Coronado.
The 150-seat patio restaurant at 1315 Orange Ave. is one of two dining venues inside the boutique hotel, which opened May 14 at the site of the former La Avenida Inn. The other is Fallen Empire, a reservation-only hidden oyster and champagne bar.
Both are operated by CH Projects, the San Diego hospitality group founded by Arsalun Tafazoli in 2007. The company runs roughly 20 bars and restaurants across San Diego County.
Night Hawk's menu leans on wood-fired cooking, with dishes including charred lamb lollipops, whole fish, seafood, pasta and skewers. The saganaki, a Greek fried cheese coated in panko, arrives drenched in olive oil and set ablaze tableside before a finish of honey, lemon and ouzo, according to a review published Monday, Sept. 7, by The Coronado News.
Reviewer Michelle Armas described servers in peach-colored velvet suits carrying fake books as notepads, with décor details like silver seashell-shaped pitchers, insect symbols on menus and lobster designs on cushions.
The cocktail program draws on Greek ingredients including citrus, olive oil, wild herbs, sea salt and smoke, the Coronado Times reported in May. Drinks carry names like Shade With Intent, Jungle Bird and Spanakopita Punch. A selection of Greek wines rounds out the bar.
The restaurant takes its name from the Edward Hopper painting of a luminous diner on an empty street corner, according to its website. The space is set entirely outdoors, with rock-formed booths that echo a Greek-island feel.
The Baby Grand project cost about $17 million and took roughly five years to complete, the Los Angeles Times reported in May. The 31-room hotel sits about a block from the Hotel del Coronado. Guest rooms start at $350 per night.
"I see this as a staycation for locals from San Diego County," Tafazoli told the Los Angeles Times in May. "The big risk is that we don't get locals and it doesn't resonate with tourists who like the status quo."
Night Hawk is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Weekend brunch runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations are available through OpenTable.
