NASCAR will race at Naval Air Station North Island one more time before moving on.

The sanctioning body announced Tuesday, Aug. 25, that NASCAR San Diego Weekend presented by Anduril will return to the Coronado base from Thursday, July 30, through Sunday, Aug. 1, 2027. The event will feature the NASCAR Cup Series and the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series on the 16-turn, 3.4-mile Qualcomm Circuit, but the Craftsman Truck Series will not come back.

A new addition: Navy Community Night on Thursday, July 30, will offer free access to U.S. Navy personnel and Coronado community members, with O'Reilly Auto Parts Series practice and qualifying on track.

After 2027, NASCAR and the Department of Defense plan to rotate the military-base street race to a different installation. No location has been named for 2028, making next summer the last confirmed race in Coronado. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a statement reported by CBS 8 that the rotation will "reach more service members across the country and build an enduring tradition."

Mayor backs the return

Coronado Mayor John Duncan said hosting the event "is a unique opportunity for our community and one that brings tremendous energy to our city, our residents and local businesses." He added that the city looks forward to "partnering with NASCAR to ensure a smooth and successful race weekend in Coronado."

Organizers promise fixes after fan complaints

The sold-out inaugural race in June drew more than 100,000 visitors from all 50 states over three days. It was the first NASCAR event ever held on an active military installation and the first Cup Series race in San Diego County history. But the weekend wasn't without problems. Several fans told Fox 5/KUSI that long concession lines and a lack of shade made for an unpleasant experience.

NASCAR Chief Operating Officer Ben Kennedy told NASCAR.com that organizers spent a day and a half at an offsite retreat in Charlotte reviewing the 2026 event. "Fans will expect some changes to the experience," Kennedy said. "The course, for the most part, is going to stay intact … but really focused on ingress, egress, concession stands, the viewpoints and perspectives for a lot of our fans that are sitting in the stands."

NASCAR San Diego President Amy Lupo said the organization is "fully committed to improving the experience for our fans."

Cup race elevated to In-Season Challenge finale

The Cup Series race on Saturday, Aug. 1, will serve as the championship round of the 2027 NASCAR In-Season Challenge, a five-race, 32-driver midseason tournament now in its third year. The Cup race will air on TNT, truTV and HBO Max. The O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race on Friday, July 31, will air on The CW and the ESPN App.

The event also shifts from Father's Day weekend to late July, moving from the June dates used in 2026.

Tickets have not gone on sale. Fans can register for presale access at nascarsandiego.com. Start times have not been announced.

During the June 2026 race, the City of Coronado posted public alerts about heavy traffic on the Coronado Bridge. No traffic management plan for 2027 has been released.
