Every child who auditions will be cast in the Coronado Junior Arts League's fall production of Disney's Frozen JR., the third show from the young nonprofit that partners with the city's Recreation & Golf Services department.

Auditions are set for Wednesday, Sept. 9, open to children ages 8 to 16, according to the city's program announcement. Rehearsals run from Monday, Sept. 14 through Friday, Dec. 11, with the production featuring songs including "Let It Go," "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" and "Love Is an Open Door," along with numbers from the Broadway adaptation.

Registration opened Aug. 5 for Coronado residents and Aug. 12 for non-residents. Families can sign up online at coronado.ca.us/register, by phone at 619-522-7342, or in person at the Recreation Department.

The no-cut policy is central to the League's approach. "Everybody who signs up gets a role," founder Catherine Baker said in a May 2024 interview with Coronado 365 Magazine about the organization's Annie Jr. production. "The audition process is purely for casting, to know where that person fits."

No experience is required.

Baker founded the nonprofit after her daughter's love of musical theater inspired her to create a youth program on the island. The League staged its first show, "The Wizard of Oz," in November 2023, followed by "Annie Jr." in May 2024. Frozen JR. marks at least its third full production.

Director Wilfred Paloma, a theater artist and professor at both the University of San Diego and San Diego State University, has directed and choreographed more than 45 junior musicals. In the same May 2024 interview, Paloma described a mentorship structure in which older students from Coronado School of the Arts serve as role models for younger cast members.

"The dream is to get these kids ready for CoSA (the Coronado School of the Arts)," Baker said in the same piece. "Get them exposed to all the amazing opportunities there are out there. It's nice to have something on the island."
