Coronado Unified School District Board President Renee Cavanaugh published safety guidance for students who walk and bike to school. The letter appeared Wednesday, Aug. 26 in the Coronado Eagle & Journal, roughly two weeks after the 2026-27 school year began Aug. 10 at CUSD's four campuses: Coronado High School, Coronado Middle School, Village Elementary and Silver Strand Elementary.

"Monday through Friday, we have hundreds of students and their families walking and biking to and from school," Cavanaugh wrote. "Crossing guards help to ensure the safety of everyone, but we can all do more …"

The guidance breaks into three groups.

For students: Walk on sidewalks, not in the street. Stop and cross only at intersections. Ride bikes in bike lanes, not on sidewalks. Dismount and walk bikes through crosswalks. Obey crossing guards. Be observant of others.

For parents: Model safe behavior. Reinforce safety rules with children. Follow traffic laws. Leave enough time in the morning so kids don't rush.

For drivers and neighbors: Avoid school zones during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal if possible. Slow down near buses, cyclists and pedestrians. Be patient as students practice safe habits.

The bike-on-sidewalk rule aligns with a Coronado City Council ordinance adopted in late 2024 that banned e-bikes from all city sidewalks, effective early January 2025.

CUSD also maintains a student safety page with resources including bike helmet requirements for families looking for additional guidance.
