Coronado teachers have until Saturday, Sept. 12, to apply for $500 classroom grants through the North Island Credit Union Foundation's fall Teacher Grant program.

The foundation will award 10 grants to educators in San Diego and Riverside counties, Coronado News CA reported. Those 10 are part of a broader 20-grant program run alongside California Credit Union Foundation, which awards 10 more in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Ventura counties, according to the program's application page.

Winners will be announced Monday, Sept. 28.

The program has a Coronado track record. Coronado High School teacher Katherine Quinly received one of the foundation's fall 2025 grants, awarded in December 2025, according to Coronado News CA's coverage of that cycle. Her specific project was not disclosed in available records.

"Some of the most memorable learning experiences begin with a teacher's creative idea," Marvel Ford, president of North Island Credit Union Foundation, said in the foundation's Aug. 24 announcement. "Through our Teacher Grant program, we are proud to help educators bring those ideas to life …"

Ford said the grants give students opportunities to explore and connect with learning.

Past recipients have used the money for projects including building model bridges and houses, creating an underwater city, supporting an entrepreneur course for high school seniors and designing a sensory garden and community learning space.

Who is eligible

Full-time teachers in San Diego and Riverside counties can apply. Credit union members teaching anywhere in California also qualify. Proposed projects must have clear learning objectives and demonstrate creativity, according to the foundation.

The North Island Credit Union Foundation focuses on four areas: investing in communities and youth, supporting educators and schools, promoting financial literacy and honoring service members. Since launching the Teacher Grant program in 2012, the foundation has awarded $235,000 in grants to benefit students across Southern California.

Teachers can apply online at ccu.com/teachergrant. The deadline is Saturday, Sept. 12.
