Coronado Unified School District (CUSD) families will receive a monthly snapshot of campus behavior trends starting at the end of September, delivered through a new tool the district calls the Discipline Dashboard.

Superintendent Karl Mueller introduced the dashboard at the Aug. 20 board meeting, the first of the 2026-2027 school year. Mueller said the district created the tool in response to community questions about how discipline is handled on campus, the Coronado Times reported.

The dashboard will track behavior patterns across CUSD schools each month and outline how the district responded. It will also include resources and links to help parents talk with their children about any shifts or trends the data reveals. Mueller said the tool is tied directly to the district's Discipline Action Guide, which spells out consequences for specific infractions.

Student names will not appear. Neither will times or exact dates of incidents.

Mueller showed a draft version at the Aug. 20 meeting that included a legend and descriptions of tracked behaviors. He said the dashboard should provide "a little more clarity" for parents who may not know how the district handles individual cases, because confidentiality rules prevent administrators from disclosing specific consequences.

The district also plans to use the data internally. According to Mueller's written report presented at the meeting, staff will monitor whether particular behaviors are rising or falling and direct additional attention, resources or support where the numbers warrant it, the Coronado Eagle & Journal reported.

Board member Renee Cavanaugh said the board wants to identify where more resources and support are needed for students, teachers and parents.

Board member Dr. Scot Youngblood pointed to complaints the board has received from parents about playground and classroom incidents. "What we hear from parents is 'this occurred on the playground, this occurred in the class, the perpetrator wasn't punished, or nothing happened,'" Youngblood said at the Aug. 20 meeting.

Youngblood added that the board supports holding students accountable and enforcing the Disciplinary Action Guide after proper investigation.

Parents can expect the first Discipline Dashboard in the superintendent's email at the end of September. The next regularly scheduled CUSD Board of Trustees meeting is Thursday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. in the District Office Board Room.
