Coronado High sophomore Evan Russo ran a personal-best 16:37.26 over three miles to finish eighth at the New Balance San Diego River Park Invitational, according to results reported by Coronado Times.
Russo was the only underclassman in the top 10 of the varsity boys race, holding his own against a field of juniors and seniors. The time shaved 14 seconds off the 16:51 he ran at the CCA Ravens Invitational on Sept. 5, when he finished 21st in a 300-runner sophomore field.
Two more Islanders cracked the top 50. Sophomore Ayrton Reyes placed 47th in a personal-best 17:52.47, and junior Ziggy Raunig was close behind in 49th at 18:01.79.
Sophomore Diego Ibarra Cruz broke 20 minutes for the first time, running a personal-best 19:40.03. Ibarra Cruz debuted in cross country at the Vaquero Stampede on Aug. 22, finishing 140th out of 367 runners. Head coach Pete Wilson noted in an August report in The Coronado News that Ibarra Cruz had limited distance-running experience entering the season.
Three meets later, he has dropped well under the 20-minute mark.
Junior Timothy Gilbert, senior Oliver Surdykowski and sophomore Jacob Ingold also completed the varsity course for Coronado. Freshman Felix Scott ran the 2.55-mile Division 2 frosh-soph race.
On the girls' side, senior Carly Devore led the Islanders with a 39th-place finish in 22:48.97 in the Division 2 varsity race. Senior Lily Humphrey was 46th in 23:11.86, giving Coronado two top-50 finishers. Teaghan Carpenito, Olivia Barker and Ava Schlomer also completed the varsity girls course. Senior Vivian Scott did not finish despite a full effort.
The meet results were supplied by Wilson. The Islanders' schedule as the season moves toward league competition has not been announced.
