Coronado residents who rely on Nixle for emergency alerts and city notifications will need to sign up for a new system to keep receiving them.
The City of Coronado announced Oct. 7 that it is replacing Nixle with Everbridge, a free mass notification platform. The city said current Nixle subscribers must create a new Everbridge account to continue receiving alerts. The switch becomes final in April 2027, when the city will stop sending notifications through Nixle entirely.
Both systems will run side by side during a six-month transition period, according to the city's announcement. That overlap is meant to give residents time to register before the cutover.
What changes for residents
The city said Everbridge will deliver the same types of alerts Nixle handled: emergency and public safety warnings, bridge updates, road closures, weather advisories, community advisories and other time-sensitive information. The platform can push those alerts through multiple communication channels, the city said.
Everbridge will also give residents more control over which types of notifications they receive, more than the city said Nixle offered.
Registration is free. The city's Everbridge page at projectcoronado.org/everbridge includes step-by-step guides and a video tutorial walking residents through the sign-up process.
How to sign up
Residents can register at projectcoronado.org/everbridge. Those who need help can email [email protected].
What's at stake
Coronado's notification system is how the city pushes out Coronado Bay Bridge closures, traffic detours and public safety emergencies. Anyone who does not create an Everbridge account before April 2027 will stop receiving those updates from the city.
The city has not announced a specific date within April 2027 when Nixle will shut down or whether it plans to hold in-person registration events. Residents who want uninterrupted alerts can register at projectcoronado.org/everbridge.
