The Sharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary wants residents' vintage castoffs before its annual Holiday Fair, with donations due Saturday, Oct. 17.
The auxiliary is hosting the fair Friday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sandermann Auditorium, 265 Soledad Place, as first reported by the Coronado Times. Vintage items must be dropped off Oct. 17 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the same address.
The vintage section is the brainchild of auxiliary volunteer Mari Gilbert, who pitched the concept ahead of an earlier Summer Fair. That section turned out to be the fair's top earner. Gilbert will run the tables again.
"If it's old, somebody wants it!" Gilbert said.
Her tables will feature 1980s-to-present fashion, including denim, leather jackets, designer pieces, rock and roll T-shirts and jewelry. She'll also display Hotel del Coronado memorabilia from the 1930s, items from when her grandmother lived at the hotel.
Organizers are looking for specific items: '80s shoulder-pad jackets, children's lunch boxes with Roy Rogers or Star Wars characters, evening bags, hats, costume jewelry, old Levi's, 1950s luggage and anything military or nautical. No furniture or large items can be accepted due to space constraints.
One hundred percent of proceeds from items sold at the fair go to the hospital. Most funds will support the auxiliary's pledge to the hospital's Primary Stroke Center. The auxiliary has also begun funding the Katy Green and Cathy McJannet Nursing Scholarship program, which helps current Sharp Coronado Hospital employees advance their nursing careers.
Beyond the vintage section, returning vendors include Robbins Kelly's rum cakes, Specialty Accessories clothing, Pouch Leather Bags and Pampered Chef cooking tools. Shoppers will also find handmade quilts from the auxiliary's Quilt and Afghan Committee, which produces about 80 lap quilts a year for patients at the Villa or in hospice care. The Holiday and Summer Fairs are the only times those quilts are available for purchase.
The Nono Jose Argentinas food truck will serve empanadas and other fare on-site.
