A panel on the history and preservation of the Silver Strand opens the Coronado Historical Association's fall Wine & Lecture season Thursday, Sept. 10, at the CHA museum on Orange Avenue.

The event, titled "The Silver Strand: Nature's Bridge to Discovery," will feature speakers discussing the past, present conservation work and future outlook for the narrow barrier island. The Strand stretches seven miles between the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay along the state-designated Silver Strand Scenic Highway.

A wine and cheese reception begins at 5:30 p.m. at 1100 Orange Ave. The lecture runs from 6 to 7 p.m.

The lecture's subtitle is also the name of a 1.5-mile bayside nature trail on the Strand, built in 1998 by the Silver Strand Beautification Project. That trail features environmental education signage and viewing decks overlooking the least tern preserve, salt marsh and bay habitats. It received the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Landmark Award in 2018, according to the Coronado Times.

Portions of the Strand's beaches are designated critical habitat under the federal Endangered Species Act for the western snowy plover, listed as threatened, and the California least tern, listed as endangered.

The CHA said in its announcement that space is limited and reservations are required. Tickets cost $20 for CHA members and $30 for non-members. They are nonrefundable, with proceeds supporting the association's educational programs.
