Coronado High's girls' tennis team has won four straight league matches, improving to 5-1 in league play and 8-3 overall.
Freshman Paula Avila led the charge. Coronado's top singles player went undefeated in singles in both matches as the Islanders beat Christian High 12-6 and Clairemont 14-4, as first reported by the Coronado Eagle & Journal.
Avila stayed perfect.
Two doubles pairs also went 3-0 against Christian. Seniors Sam Aldworth and Brynn Belong swept all three sets, as did Lilah Cade and Ana Sofia Breton Quiroz. Cade and Breton Quiroz repeated the feat against Clairemont, where Coronado's doubles teams combined for an 8-1 record. Whitney Pate and Charlie Merriman picked up a doubles win in that match as well.
Senior Ines Gil went 2-1 in singles against Clairemont, the second meeting of the season between the two teams.
The winning streak followed a difficult stretch. Coronado had dropped back-to-back matches in mid-September, falling to 1-1 in league play. The Islanders then reeled off wins over University City, Canyon Hills, Christian and Clairemont to reach 5-1. Each of the four opponents is a league rival, and the run has put Coronado in strong position heading into the second half of the conference schedule.
Seven seniors anchor the roster: Aldworth, Belong, Cade, Gil, Julieta Rugama, Abbie McKissick and Mia Lopez. The program was recognized by the Coronado Unified School District Board of Trustees at its Nov. 13, 2025 meeting for an undefeated season.
Coronado added another win on Thursday, Oct. 1, beating Mission Bay 10-8, according to MaxPreps.
The Islanders host Mira Mesa on Tuesday, Oct. 6, then travel to University City on Thursday, Oct. 8, and host Canyon Hills on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
