Coronado High School's girls' tennis team rolled past Olympian High School 11-6 on Aug. 21 to open the 2026 season with a win.
The victory extended the Islanders' regular-season winning streak to 14 matches, dating to August 2025. Last year, Coronado went 13-0 in the regular season and captured the Eastern League title. The Coronado Unified School District Board of Trustees recognized the team for that undefeated season at its Nov. 13, 2025, meeting.
Lilah Cade and Paula Avila set the tone in singles. Cade, a 2025 First-Team All-Conference selection, went 3-0 with scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1, dropping just three games all afternoon, the Coronado Eagle & Journal reported. Avila matched her, going 3-0 with wins of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1. Abigail McKissick added a singles point with a 6-1 win over Olympian's Myla Delgado.
Coronado led 7-2 heading into doubles.
The No. 1 pairing of Brynn Belong and Samantha Aldworth won both of their doubles matches, 6-4 and 6-1. The duo is in its second season together after emerging as one of the Eastern League's stronger doubles teams in 2025. Aldworth also starts at shortstop for the Islanders softball team, and Belong is an attacker on the girls' lacrosse squad. Cade plays lacrosse as well, helping the Islanders win back-to-back CIF Open Division championships, and is committed to Rollins College for the sport.
Olympian's doubles teams kept things competitive in the second half of the match, according to the Eagle & Journal. But Coronado closed the door in the third round. Ana Sofia Breton Quiroz and Zoe Rice won 6-4, and Charlie Merriman and Whitney Pate also won 6-4, clinching the team victory.
With 14 straight regular-season wins now in hand, the Islanders carry the longest active streak in the program's recent history into the rest of the 2026 schedule.
