Coronado fell 35-14 to Madison in the Islanders' homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 2, dropping to 1-5 on the season.
The loss, the Islanders' fifth in six games, also marked their City league opener. Coronado is 0-1 in league play, according to MaxPreps.
Junior quarterback Jack O'Sullivan threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions against the Warhawks, completing 59 percent of his passes, according to the Coronado Eagle & Journal's game account. Both scoring strikes went to junior wide receiver Reese Pagon, who finished with seven catches for 100 yards.
Pagon's first touchdown, a two-yard pass from O'Sullivan, capped a drive at the end of the first quarter after Coronado had fallen behind 7-0. His second, a 32-yard connection, cut the deficit to 28-14 with 9:48 left in the fourth quarter.
Senior running back Melo Avetyan rushed for more than 100 yards and averaged 7.1 yards per carry. His biggest play was a 78-yard run early in the second quarter that moved Coronado from its own 20-yard line to first-and-goal at the two. Four consecutive runs went nowhere. The Islanders came away empty, the Eagle & Journal reported.
Coronado's defense held Madison to 21 points through three quarters, but two fourth-quarter scores by the Warhawks put the game out of reach.
"We're still a ways away from totally clicking, but we're linking things together better," head coach Josh Dean told the Eagle & Journal.
Dean, in his first year leading the program, said O'Sullivan has taken on more responsibility in the offense and is improving each week. On the season, O'Sullivan has thrown eight touchdown passes with a 59.7 percent completion rate, per MaxPreps. Pagon leads the team with 75.2 receiving yards per game and four total touchdowns.
Coronado's lone win came Sept. 4 against Classical Academy, 34-16. The Islanders have lost three straight heading into Friday, Oct. 9, when they travel to Morse for another City league game.
After Morse, the schedule includes a trip to Patrick Henry on Oct. 16, a home game against Mira Mesa on Oct. 23 and a home finale against Kearny on Oct. 30.
