Coronado High School's cross country team opened its 2026 season Sunday, Aug. 23, with 15 runners competing at the Vaquero Stampede at Lindo Lake County Park, the program's first meet under new head coach Pete Wilson.

Wilson takes over from George Green, who spent 33 years with the program and 21 as head coach. The roster skews young.

"After 33 years coaching the Islander Cross Country team with 21 of those years as the head coach, I figured it was time to pass the baton to a new coach," Green wrote in a Tuesday, Aug. 25, Coronado Times recap of the meet.

Three Islanders cracked the top 50 in their respective divisions at the two-mile event. Evan Russo led the boys with a 20th-place finish out of 367 runners in the Boys Frosh/Soph division. On the girls' side, Vivian Scott placed 35th out of 154 in the Girls Junior/Senior race, with teammate Carly DeVore close behind in 38th.

Ayrton Reyes added a top-100 finish for the boys, placing 88th in the Frosh/Soph field. Diego Ibarra Cruz, competing in his first cross country race with limited distance-running experience, finished 140th in the same division. Jacob Ingold (186th) and Jameson Laaperi (198th) also competed, along with Felix Scott and Daniel Turner.

In the Boys Junior/Senior division, Ziggy Raunig led Coronado at 122nd out of 299 runners. Timothy Gilbert, Oliver Surdykowski and Wyatt Barratt rounded out the Islander entries.

Behind Scott and DeVore in the Girls Junior/Senior race, Teaghan Carpinito finished 61st and Lily Humphrey placed 74th, giving Coronado four finishers in that division.

The Islanders next compete Saturday, Sept. 5, at the CCA Ravens Invitational.
