Four candidates vying for two Coronado City Council seats will get their first structured public stage on Wednesday, Sept. 9, when the Coronado Democratic Club hosts a forum at the Coronado Unified School District Boardroom, 201 Sixth St.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The forum runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Dan Brancaccio, a Coronado resident and Vietnam War veteran, will moderate. He will pose questions to all participating candidates and give each equal time to respond, according to the Coronado Times. Questions will focus on issues affecting Coronado residents and the city's future, the club said.
The event is a community service, not an endorsement event.
The city's election information page lists four qualified candidates for the Tuesday, Nov. 3 general election: Andrew Gade, a small business owner; Kelly Purvis, the appointed councilmember; Ricky Hoyt, an aviator and business owner; and Rebecca King, an attorney. Two seats are open, each carrying a four-year term ending in December 2030.
All candidates running for City Council have been invited to participate, though the club said it will announce confirmed participants as the event approaches.
One additional name appeared in the filing records. Mark Warner filed candidacy paperwork in July but has since withdrawn. Keith James had nomination papers issued but had not qualified as of the city's latest update.
The nomination filing period ran from July 13 through Aug. 7, with an extended window through Aug. 12 for non-incumbent candidates.
Voters heading to the polls on Nov. 3 will also decide Measure R-4, which asks whether to increase the maximum height for buildings in the city's R-4 Multiple Family Residential Zone from three stories and 35 feet to four stories and 42 feet.
The forum will be held in the CUSD Boardroom but is not a Coronado Unified School District-sponsored event.
The voter registration deadline for the Nov. 3 election is Monday, Oct. 19. Vote-by-mail ballots are scheduled to go out beginning Monday, Oct. 5.
