Coronado families will get their first look at a proposed student bicycle and e-bike policy when the school board meets Thursday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m. at 201 Sixth St.
The first reading of Board Policy 5142.04, Bicycles and E-bikes, lands as e-bike safety remains a flashpoint across Coronado. A candidate Q&A published Oct. 5 by The Coronado News found all four City Council candidates calling current enforcement inadequate. The city's existing ordinance bans e-bikes from sidewalks, beaches and parks, bars riders under 12 and carries a $25 fine.
The specific rules in the draft school policy have not been made public. A first reading does not adopt the policy; a second reading and board vote would follow at a later meeting.
Teacher contract talks open
Also on the agenda, the Association of Coronado Teachers (ACT) will present its initial contract proposals to the board as Consent Calendar Item 3.10. Under California law, a union must present opening proposals in public before negotiations begin.
The board approved tentative agreements with ACT on a 5-0 vote on May 21, closing the prior contract cycle. Thursday's presentation opens a new round.
ACT President Jennifer Landry is also scheduled to deliver a five-minute union report. The substance of ACT's opening proposals has not been released.
CHS annual report and CoSA spotlight
Principal Karin Mellina will present the Coronado High School annual report, a 15-minute agenda item followed by board discussion. Mellina has led CHS since the 2021-22 school year and has spent 20 years with the district.
The board will also hear a spotlight presentation on the Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA), the district's performing-arts program. CoSA opens its 2026-27 season with "Grease" at the Coronado Performing Arts Center, running Oct. 15 through Oct. 19.
Other items
Superintendent Karl Mueller will update the board on a technology audit, the district's discipline dashboard, volunteer training and an HVAC committee heat-day report. Mueller introduced the dashboard at the Aug. 20 board meeting as a monthly campus-behavior snapshot distributed to families. "Our goal here is really to strengthen the partnership between CUSD and our parents," Mueller said in a Sept. 2 Coronado Times report when he introduced the tool.
Senior Director of Learning Dr. Megan Battle will deliver a learning department report. Student board member Ines Gil will also give a report.
The agenda includes a closed session on personnel matters under Government Code Section 54957.
The board comprises Renee Cavanaugh, Fitzhugh Lee, Malachy Sandie, Dr. Scot Youngblood and Alexia Palacios-Peters. Meetings are livestreamed at coronadousd.net. Residents who want to speak on an agenda item have three minutes each.
The board's next regular meeting is Thursday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m.
