Sebastian Tamariz clocked a personal-best 19:45.3 to finish fifth at the Eastern League Cluster 3 meet on Thursday, Oct. 15. The Coronado High School junior led the boys open team to third place at Morley Field.
Tamariz shaved more than three minutes off his time from last season over the 3.11-mile course, according to the Coronado Times. The boys open squad scored 57 points, finishing behind La Jolla and St. Augustine.
Sophomore Ayrton Reyes placed seventh. Diego Ibarra Cruz came in 11th and senior Oliver Surdykowski finished 17th. Both Ibarra Cruz and Surdykowski set personal bests.
Four more Islanders also recorded personal bests in the boys open race. Junior Timothy Gilbert placed 19th, cutting 41 seconds off his Cluster 1 time. Sophomores Jacob Ingold (20th) and Jameson Laaperi (24th) and freshman Felix "Big Dog" Scott (38th) all hit new marks.
Eastern League Cluster 2 had been canceled because of anticipated heat, according to a separate Coronado Times report on the Oct. 1 league opener. That gave head coach Pete Wilson's squad an extra week of training before the Oct. 15 meet.
In boys varsity, sophomore Evan Russo finished 18th in a personal-best 18:06.6, improving by more than 11 seconds from Cluster 1. Russo had run 18:18.0 when he won the boys open race at the Oct. 1 meet.
Senior Vivian Scott paced the girls varsity squad with an eighth-place finish in a season-best 22:04.6. Scott improved by more than 27 seconds and moved up four places from Cluster 1. Senior Carly DeVore, a 2023 CIF State Championships competitor, placed 23rd. Junior Teaghan Carpinito finished 28th with a season-best time.
In the girls open race, junior Annalei Berke placed eighth after cutting nearly two and a half minutes off her Cluster 1 time. Junior Ava Schlomer finished 22nd.
The Islanders next compete at the UC HOKA Postal meet on Saturday, Oct. 31, followed by the Eastern League Championships on Thursday, Nov. 5.
